UNM-Gallup Construction Technology

Construction Technology at UNM-Gallup has been serving our local communities for well over thirty years. We have a local partnership with and participated in the construction of five Habitat for Humanity homes, worked on community remodel projects, assisted in the installation of solar photovoltaic systems on local homes, and offer to the community, cabinetmaking and furniture construction classes in the finest woodworking shop in McKinley County. A graduate with a degree or certificate in Construction Technology may be eligible to seek employment in the following areas: Building Maintenance Worker, General Carpentry, Plumbing Repairman, Electrical Maintenance Worker, H.V.A.C. Service Person, Concrete Trades Helper Building Materials Manufacturer, Building Materials Estimator, and Building Supervisors Assistant.

Program description and Course Requirements

AAS Construction Technology

The Associate of Applied Science in Construction Technology degree is designed to develop skills and abilities necessary to meet employment standards in the construction field. A student who completes the degree program will be prepared to hold a variety of entry level jobs in the construction industry. A graduate with a degree in Applied Science, Construction Technology may be eligible to seek employment in the following areas: Building Maintenance Worker, General Carpentry, Plumbing Repairman, Electrical Maintenance Worker, H.V.A.C. Service Person, Concrete Trades Helper Building Materials Manufacturer, Building Materials Estimator, and Building Supervisors Assistant.

Opportunities for employment for holders of a one-year certificate may include: Finish Carpenter's Helper, Apprentice Trainee, Cabinet Builder's Helper, and Form Carpenter's Helper.

What will you learn?

Enrolled students will learn fundamental skills needed to gain meaningful employment in construction fields. Students will gain a broad knowledge base of construction from blueprint reading, framing, plumbing, HVAC and electrical, to more advanced knowledge of green building, weatherization, solar energy, and alternative construction methods.
Entering students will study through class lectures and hands on training through actual construction projects.
Use critical thinking and establish a framework to provide safe and effective services for the students, college campus and community.
Display professionalism, communication skills, including a commitment to lifelong learning.

Employment Opportunities

The construction industry has experienced a winding road of recovery. The good news for those considering a construction job is that the industry is starting to hit its stride. The Labor Department remains upbeat on this sector, predicting overall employment growth of 13.6 percent, or almost 520,000 new jobs by the year 2024. Plumbers, electricians, carpenters, painters and construction managers will be needed to build new structures and update existing buildings.(*US News and World Report)
Upon completion of the Construction Technology Certificate program graduates may be eligible for entry-level employment.
